The Yellow Book - 3rd Grade Skills is a comprehensive 3rd grade language arts curriculum designed to engage children with 36 weekly lessons.
These lessons include dictation or copying literature passages from beloved books like The Tale of Benjamin Bunny (Beatrix Potter), Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Lewis Carroll), and The Tale of Jeremy Vole (Stephen Lawhead), as well as poetry selections and more.
The updated third edition makes learning easier with new lessons, journaling, and an all-inclusive format covering essential 3rd grade language skills such as reading, a 3rd grade spelling list (suggested lists included), grammar, higher-order thinking skills, creative writing for 3rd graders, and handwriting.
For teachers’ convenience, the teacher book contains notes and answers right in the margin, making it an excellent tool for guiding students.
The curriculum features four Literature Links that encourage students to build vocabulary, read for content, and improve 3rd grade reading comprehension. Exciting activities in these links bring stories to life and provide numerous opportunities for creative expression.

I really enjoyed exploring Common Sense Press and The Yellow Book. It is a great fit for third grade because it involves enough work to be challenging without becoming overwhelming. I love the focus on classic literature throughout the year.

Every day he’s doing copy work, spelling, punctuation, editing, reading and more. This is an all-in-one reading curriculum. There is no need for anything else – it’s one and done!

On the first day of each lesson, Kendra copies a literature passage in her workbook and checks it over for any errors. This copywork is an ideal way for kids to learn proper grammar and punctuation in a “real” setting—so much more effective than isolated exercises on a worksheet.

Between the all-in-one factor, open-and-go layout, and the affordability of the curriculum, I feel that LLATL is an excellent way to cover the language arts bases in your homeschool. It’s definitely worth checking out!

Each week, there's a short portion of text from a book, poem, letter or dictionary entry. Throughout the week, activities center around the text. The activities are engaging and to the point. Each of the following areas are addressed in the yellow book in a variety of ways, making it feel less systematic than other curricula.
